I
wanted to make this something spectacular. It's been nearly two years
since I began this blog, and I've managed a post a week the entire
time, plus one or two extras. I hoped to find some major source of
inspiration and give my readers an early-early Christmas gift of
something astounding.
Then...Tuesday
happened.
It
was the most severe gutpunch I have experienced in my life, and it
killed most of my desire to write. I spent most of Wednesday in
something like a sick daze. I'm getting better as I process it, but
it's so rough. I thought so much
better of my countryfolk than this. I honestly don't know how
I'm going to get through the next four years (or however long it
takes to impeach his orange ass and discredit his entire
administration). But I will
try to continue my posting rate. I have posts brewing from before
this catastrophe, and hopefully my psyche is resilient enough to
recover and keep providing content (in addition to all the real-world
activism I will most assuredly
be doing).
Because
we still have Disneyland. We still have that. I'm going to need it
dearly in the near future, to escape the horror of reality once in a
while. That's what it's there for, isn't it? To be a better
place than the world we live in?
So
I offer you this for Disneyland Dilettante Post #100: 100 Disneyland

We are all still Americans. Let there be some things on which we are
still united.
Great list and great subject! Looking in from the outside, you guys had my sympathies. BUT politics aside, focusing on the fun, and wonder, and beauty of Disneyland...
ReplyDeleteI don't have my list numbered, or thoroughly thought out, but here are a few to add in:
1) Packing the night before, anticipating what you'll need and how much space to leave in your suitcase.
2) Tearing off from work to get to the airport.
3) Finally, three hours later, arriving over Los Angeles and, if we're lucky, catching a glimpse of Disneyland from the air.
4) Touchdown!
5) Getting our stuff and getting out of the airport ASAP because DISNEYLAND AWAITS!
6) Arrival at our motel (behind DCA usually), throwing in our suitcases and hotfooting it out in record time.
7) The humid smell of flowers along W. Katella and Disneyland Dr.
8) First sight of the Esplanade, Disneyland's gates, and Main St. Station.
9) Speaking of which, the blow of the train whistle and the pre-recorded conductor booming ""Your attention please. The Disneyland Limited is now arriving from a trip around Walt Disney's Magic Kingdom. Passengers will stand by to board... Your attention please. The Disneyland limited is now leaving for a grand circle tour of the Magic Kingdom. With stops at New Orleans Square, Mickey's ToonTown and Tomorrowland. All passengers BOOOOOOOARD."
10) Taking the grand circle tour!
11) Slowly sauntering up Main St., and even stopping on a porch to just people watch and take it in.
12) Watching cartoons in the Main St. Cinema.
13) Getting my fortune told by Esmeralda.
14) And a prescription from Shrunken Ned.
15) Enjoying a Dole whip or Dole float in the Enchanted Tiki Room lanai.
16) Singing like the birdies sing.
17) The Jungle Cruise, every bit of it.
18) Matterhorn macaroons at the Jolly Holiday Bakery.
19) Fried chicken in the gorgeous Plaza Inn.
20) Taking mental notes about the decor in Main St. for future use at home.
21) The first steps through the castle.
22) Riding all the Fantasyland rides, as much as possible, screaming and making general fools of ourselves and carrying on ("Ah! Oh no! This car is out of control!" "EEK! The Evil Queen!").
23) Dancing down Main St. when "Fortuosity" starts playing.
24) Enjoying the relaxed atmosphere of Frontierland, and hearing music from Davy Crockett play.
25) Buying a mint julep, racing over to the dock, and drinking it aboard the Mark Twain Riverboat.
26) Riding the Mark Twain Riverboat multiple times.
27) Walking along the paths of Tom Sawyer's Island when we need a break and some exposure to nature.
28) Recognizing the references to Mark Twain's writings on Tom Sawyer's Island.
29) The Haunted Mansion, all of it, and quietly reciting the lines along with the characters.
30) And being that guy who screams "OW!" when the skeleton falls.
31) Fantasmic.
32) Cheering for the villains in Fantasmic.
33) Secretly being glad that Mickey won in Fantasmic.
34) Pixie dust from the Biddy Bobbidy Boutique getting everywhere.
35) Little girls screaming for their favourite princess at parades, Fantasmic, etc.
36) Screwing up the courage to pose for the camera on Splash Mountain before assuming the crash position.
37) Uncle Remus quotes in the queue of Splash Mountain, and knowing that I actually catch the references because most people don't have the chance to see the film.
38) Catching Max, Buff, and Melvin on the Winnie the Pooh ride.
39) Having the proportions of a cartoon character, which works great for taking photos in Toontown.
40) Meeting Mickey!
41) Trader Sam's Enchanted Tiki Bar. All of it.
42) Screaming "w're all gonna' die" the first one or two times someone orders a Krakatoa.
I'm actually going to leave it there because I need to get going, but I may have to pick it up again on my own blog :) In the mean time, congratulations on your 100th post! I always look forward to seeing what you write and will continue to do so for another 100!
Many of your items are things I left out this time around because the attractions in question are currently closed. I wrote it partly in anticipation of the trip I made yesterday and wanted to focus on things I could potentially do in the present.
DeleteIn an ironic twist, we wound up spending most of the day in California Adventure because Disneyland was ridiculously crowded and there's the Festival of Holidays going on across the Esplanade. We saw the new World of Color, listened to some great bands, and wandered around Redwood Creek Challenge Trail, where they have hung jingle bells from the suspension bridges and climbing nets.
Are they doing Viva Navidad this year? That was awesome!
DeleteViva Navidad! and then some!
